A Proud Brook Hill Lower School Alumni Mom

From the desk of Heather Fletcher, Wife of the Headmaster:

After being a Lower School mom for almost 10 years, I no longer have a child on that campus.  Like a typical mother, my life revolves around my three boys and their worlds; so sadly, I have not been at the Lower School as much these past two years since my youngest moved to Middle School.  Today the Admissions Office asked me to give two visiting families tours of the lower campus.  What an amazing morning!  The years my boys spent there were wonderful, and today made me miss it so much!  My sons have become the young men they are today in large part because of this school.

As always when I am on any part of the Brook Hill campus, I truly sense God’s favor – I sense it as soon as I drive in the front gates.  I sense His presence, His peace, and His purpose.  Today, as I walked around on my tours, with every step I was completely overwhelmed with God’s favor, His presence, His peace, and His purpose.  In the office, we were greeted with a smiling principal and her assistant who love their jobs and love Brook Hill. The gym was filled with happy children truly being intentionally active with Varsity coaches during their PE class.  Young children were getting private strings lessons in the Dining Hall while yummy smells of lunch were being prepared.  The housekeeping staff looked happy and sweet as they cleaned and prepared the facilities for their specific purposes.  In the music classroom, while PreK students listened to music, the music teacher oozed with excitement as he shared about what each grade is experiencing and the opportunities he has to lead worship at Chapel as well as the privilege he has to be with his students each week.  The art room was filled with 5th graders cheerfully creating and preparing beautiful projects for Fine Arts Week.  In the science lab, 2nd graders were studying the three parts of matter and excitedly introduced our guests to Einstein, the Bearded Dragon.  In the Library, kindergarteners were finding books and doing research on animals that live in Australia.  In a second grade classroom, students were dressed as great Americans preparing for their Wax Museum Presentations.  The Headmaster walked into one room to deliver orange and blue M&Ms to a child celebrating her birthday.  In another classroom, the students were gathered around making ice cream.  A PreK teacher spoke of her students having rest time and how she couldn’t wait for it to be over so they could begin a new unit on healthy choices using the interactive Promethean Board.

In every room, teachers and students were engaged and learning.  As we walked down the hallways and into the classrooms, the teachers welcomed us and were willing to introduce themselves and share a quick overview of what their class is doing right now in each subject.  Students were happy to see guests while able to continue staying on task, even if their teacher turned their attention to us for a few minutes.  As we looked out windows, there was laughter and running on the playground during recess.

As I toured with these guests, I was overcome with pride.   I was so incredibly blessed today.  I am blessed to be a mother of three Brook Hill students.  My three sons are blessed to be Brook Hill students.  Our family is blessed to be a part of the Brook Hill family.  What I saw and experienced today is so special – and unique.  Everyone on the Lower School campus seemed happy and growing – just like I remembered.  I truly felt that I was seeing the school’s mission taking place before my eyes – college preparatory education, affirmation of gifts and potential being challenged, and character being shaped to be Christ-like.  As I drove off the campus, I felt God’s favor, His presence, His peace, and His purpose go with me because of being at Brook Hill today.

I am a happy and grateful Brook Hill Lower School Alumni Mom.
