National Merit Scholarship Competition
Lauren Langsjoen was selected as a 2008 National Merit Commended Scholar. She is one of 34,000 seniors in the country that have received this distinction. Congratulations, Lauren!
Rotary Club Most Outstanding Senior Awards
Cody Franklin and Lauren Langsjoen have been chosen to receive the Most Outstanding Senior Awards through the Rotary Club.
Rotary Club Young Citizen Award
Cody Franklin and Lauren Langsjoen have been selected to represent Brook Hill by receiving the Rotary Club Young Citizen Award. They will be recognized at a luncheon in May.
DAR Good Citizen Award
Lauren Langsjoen was recognized by the Mary Tyler Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution as The Brook Hill School’s 2008 DAR Good Citizen. She was presented her award during a recognition tea on February 12, 2008 at Willowbrook Country Club in Tyler. Being named a DAR Good Citizen was a result of her demonstration of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. In addition to her award, Lauren was invited to participate in an impromptu essay competition resulting in her being selected for the chapter’s highest honor—a $500 college scholarship.
2007 AP Scholars Announced
Congratulations to Kira Langsjoen and So Hyun Park (Class of 2007) for being named 2007 AP Scholars. AP Scholars are selected by College Board based on passing three different AP exams.
Wendy’s Heisman Awards
Congratulations to Cody Franklin and Shelby Rozell who were selected as The Brook Hill School’s nominees in the 2007 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award Program. Selection was based on excellence in the classroom, on the field and within their communities. As nominees, they are being recognized for all of their hard work and dedication as scholar-athlete-citizens.
Tyler Junior College Top Ten Scholars
Each year, Tyler Junior College recognizes our top senior students for excellence in the area of academics. Each student is invited to a recognition breakfast and presented a $4000 scholarship. Congratulations to our 2008 Top Ten Scholars—Steven Anderson, Michelle Balfay, Hee Chan Chang, Kara Flynn, Spencer Hagen, Jenny Ho, Kent Kim, Lauren Langsjoen, Shelby Rozell, and David-Alan Rubin.
GeoForce Texas Science Program
Kenai Walker, Brook Hill freshman, was accepted into the GeoForce Texas Science Program. He will receive an all expense paid opportunity for current 10th grade students to experience hands-on geoscience activities in the Texas Hill Country this summer. Kenai is one of 40 students to receive this honor. The East Texas STEM Center at UT Tyler has partnered with the University of Texas – Jackson School of Geosciences to provide this unique educational opportunity. We are very proud of Kenai and applaud his efforts.
Miss Teen Southlake 2008
Heather Henrichson was crowned Miss Teen Southlake 2008 during the Miss Teen Southlake competition at the Carroll Senior High School Auditorium. As Miss Teen Southlake, Heather is awarded a college scholarship and has the opportunity to compete in the Miss Teen Texas competition. Congratulations, Heather!
SAR Essay Contest Winner
Brandon Frisby, a junior at The Brook Hill School, was honored by members of the Sons of the American Revolution as he was the winner of the regional SAR essay contest. The contest is open to any sophomore through senior level student who writes about an idea associated with the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence, or framing of the United States Constitution. Brandon's essay will now go on to compete against others in the state and, hopefully, national competitions in the anticipation of a scholarship of $2,000, publication in the SAR magazine, and a trip to California to the SAR Annual Congress.
SAR Texas State Essay Contest Winner
Brandon Frisby was named as the winner in the Texas State SAR Essay Contest. He will be presented with an award and $1500 scholarship at the Texas SAR State Convention in Arlington on March 29th. Brandon's essay will now compete in the national competition for a chance to win a $2000 college scholarship. Congratulations, Brandon!
Youth and Government State Meet
Brook Hill has a lot to be proud of today as our students performed extremely well at the state meet this last weekend. Abby Clements, Jennifer Martinez and Mason Lieberman all received Distinguished Delegate awards (the highest honor given to students) for their work on the Governor’s Task Force. In the most competitive section of Youth and Government, the judicial section, we had one team compete. There were forty-one judicial teams competing and Brook Hill’s team made it to the Showcase Rounds. This means we were in the top 10 teams in the state. The attorney team members are: Chris Crist and Brandon Frisby, attorneys; Yesmien Oeurghi, Kip Picarella, and Jessica Johnson, witnesses.

4th Place in Literary Criticism: Jamee Eslicker
5th Place in Prose Interpretation: Woon Ji Choi

TMEA High School All Region Choir
Congratulations to Brook Hill Choir students David Brown (5th chair Bass), Kyle Tabler (9th chair Tenor), and Erica Eden (3rd chair Soprano). They were chosen for the TMEA High School All Region Choir at the auditions in Whitehouse. These students will now move on to the Pre-Area auditions in November. They will also perform with this distinguished choir at the Cowan Center in late November.
Pre-Area Vocal Competition
David Brown and Erica Eden both placed in the pre-area vocal competition. They had previously earned a spot in the top 16 for the Region back in September. These same 16 competed in their respective sections for 5 places. Erica placed 2nd in the soprano section and David placed 3rd in the bass section. They will now go on to the final audition in Dallas in January and will compete for spots in the All-State Choir. They are the first two Brook Hill students to ever make it to this round.
TAPPS District Vocal Contest
Congratulations to The Brook Hill School Choir. Three small ensembles and nine soloists received superior ratings for their performances. These singers will now advance to the TAPPS State meet in April. Soloists receiving superior ratings were pianists Marcus Bennett, Sarah Blair, and Christine Feng. Vocalists receiving the highest honors were Christine Feng, Heather Henrichson, Erica Eden, David Brown, Kyle Tabler, and Chris Dawson. Kip Picarella and Angie Tarango also received Excellent ratings for their fine performances.
TAPPS Regional Vocal Contest
Congratulations to the Upper School Mixed Choir for receiving a superior rating for their performance at the 2008 TAPPS Regional Music Contest. They will advance to the state competition in April at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor!
TAPPS 3A State Vocal Music Contest
The Upper School Choir competed at the TAPPS State Vocal and Piano Competition last Friday and was named the State 3A Runner Up again this year. We were just barely edged out of first place by Austin Concordia School. This makes five years in a row that the Brook Hill Choir has placed in the top 4 in our division. Receiving Superior ratings were vocal soloists David Brown, Erica Eden, and Christine Feng. Pianists Marcus Bennett, Sarah Blair, and Christine Feng also received Superior ratings for their performances. The Ladies Ensemble also received a Superior rating and the Mixed Choir received a Superior rating in sight-reading – one of only three Superiors given in sight-reading all day! Receiving Excellent ratings were soloists Chris Dawson and Kyle Tabler, as well as the Men’s Ensemble, the Small Mixed Ensemble, and the Mixed Choir.
TMEA All-Region Orchestra
Congratulations to six US Orchestra students for making the TMEA All-Region Orchestra. BH musicians earning a place in the 2007-2008 TMEA All-Region High School Orchestra are violist, April Peddy; cellist, Mason Lieberman; violinists Hee Chan Chang, Kent Kim, Sarah Mullicane & Megan Troxell. Hee Chan earned top honors as Concertmaster of the Region Orchestra for the third consecutive year. These outstanding BH musicians will perform with the 2007-2008 TMEA All-Region High School Orchestra on Saturday, January 26, 2008 at RE Lee High School.
ATSSB All-Region Band
Congratulations to three of our US woodwind players for making the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB) 2007-2008 All-Region Band. Our students competed with hundreds of other high school students at the ATSSB Region auditions at Rusk High School. Flautists, Eun Ji Jung and Hye Bin Kim earned positions in the ATSSB Region Concert Band and clarinetist, Winni Jeong earned a place in the top ATSSB Symphonic Band! Congratulations to these outstanding musicians!
TAPPS District Orchestra Contest
Congratulations to The Brook Hill School Orchestra for their superior performances. The Orchestra entered seven small ensembles (4 string and 3 woodwind), 3 string solos and 2 woodwind solos and received Superior I ratings for all events! Superior rated string ensemble participants include Hee Chan Chang, Megan Troxell, Sarah Mullicane, Kent Kim, Ji Hyun Kim, April Peddy, Jamala Christopher, Luke Baker, Mason Lieberman, Daniel Sharpless and Heath Dickey. Woodwind ensemble participants earning superior ratings were Winni Jeong, Hye Bin Kim, Eun Ji Jung, Soo Young Choi and Chris Lee. Soloists receiving superior I ratings were Hee Chan Chang, violin; April Peddy, viola; Daniel Sharpless, bass; Winni Jeong, clarinet; and, Chris Lee, flute. These fine musicians will advance to the TAPPS State meet in April!
TAPPS Regional Orchestra Contest
Congratulations to the Brook Hill Orchestra for receiving Superior I ratings at the 2008 TAPPS Regional Music Contest! The orchestra performed eight different pieces in four events: Large Ensemble, Sight-Reading, and 2 Medium Ensemble events and received Superior ratings in every event. The entire Brook Hill Orchestra will participate in the 2008 TAPPS State Music Contest, held April 12th at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
TAPPS 3A State Music Contest
The Brook Hill Orchestra competed at the 2008 TAPPS State Music Contest held at Mary-Hardin Baylor University on Saturday, April 12, 2008 and earned the ranking of 2008 TAPPS 3A State Runner Up in Instrumental Music. Since 2004, the Brook Hill Orchestra has placed in the top 3 for our division in TAPPS music competition. Receiving Superior ratings were the String Orchestra Large Ensemble, String Medium Ensemble, Mozart String Quartet, Violin Trio, Vivaldi String Quintet, Flute Trio, Flute Quartet and Mixed Woodwind Quartet. Soloists receiving Superior ratings were violinist, Hee Chan Chang; violist, April Peddy; string bassist, Daniel Sharpless; clarinetist, Winni Jeong and flutist, Chris Lee. Earning an Excellent rating were the Advanced String Ensemble, String Quintet and the Orchestra Sight –Reading event. Orchestra Students to Perform with East Texas Symphony
Two Brook Hill musicians, violinist Hee Chan Chang and cellist Mason Lieberman recently won an audition to perform side-by-side with the East Texas Symphony. They will perform on Saturday, April 26 at the UTT Cowan Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.
Brook Hill Orchestra Students to Participate in Missions
Three Brook Hill orchestra students have been invited to participate with the Green Acres Celebration Choir and Orchestra this summer on the New York Mission Trip in June 2008. They will be involved in several mission opportunities, along with the honor of performing at the prestigious Lincoln Center. These students include Mason Lieberman, Sarah Mullicane, and Heath Dickey. This is an amazing opportunity for these students to be a part of this ministry reaching beyond the boundaries of East Texas to witness to people through servitude and music. We're proud of our BH orchestra students!
Young Musician of the Year
Brook Hill senior and outstanding violinist, Hee Chan Chang is this year’s top winner of the Tyler Music Coterie’s “Young Musician of the Year” scholarship award. Senior high musicians throughout the East Texas area competed for the scholarship on March 8, 2008 at Marvin United Methodist Church. Hee Chan received the top scholarship award of $1200 and will perform in recital with the other two secondary winners on Thursday, May 8, 2008 at 10:30am in the Marvin United Methodist Chapel. The “Young Musician of the Year” recital performance is open to friends and family of the scholarship winners.
Rotary Club Young Citizen Award
Coleman Beam and Abbigail English have been selected to represent Brook Hill MS by receiving the Rotary Club Young Citizen Award. They will be recognized at a luncheon in May.
Duke University TIP Program
Congratulations to Brook Hill seventh grade students Dakota Aarant, Emily Allen, Abigail Baker, Coleman Beam, Addison Clark, Cody Collins, Mason Dickey, Alyssa Eden, David Eichelberger, Ty Emerson, Abbigail English, Bailey Franklin, Timber Garner, Kyle Johnson, Rachel Laughton, Jordan Love, Hunter Mapes, Daniel Mehling, Adolfo Ortiz, Brianna Ridgley, Baylee Rozell, Raquel Rubin, Danni Russell, Caleb Rutter, Carson Smith, Andrew Swink, Grant Troxell, and Kirby Vinson who were identified in the most recent Duke Talent Search. Twenty-eight of the 51 seventh graders from The Brook Hill School qualify for the Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP). This is the seventh year that The Brook Hill School has participated in this program, and we are very proud of these students.
PSIA Academic District 4A Meet
On Friday, February 15, more than 50 middle school students from The Brook Hill School competed in the Private School Interscholastic Association (PSIA) Academic District 4A meet held at TK Gorman in Tyler. The students were awarded 58 ribbons for 1st through 6th place finishes and earned 495 team points. Thirteen students who placed either 1st or 2nd in their event will advance to the state meet to be held Saturday, May 3 at TCU in Forth Worth.
TMEA Middle School All-Region Choir
Brook Hill students competed in the TMEA Middle School All-Region Choir competition in Hallsville. The students earning places in the Tenor/Bass choir were Grant Troxell, Graham Inglish, Michael Ayers, and for the Treble Choir was Alyssa Eden. They will perform with their choirs on November 17 at The Cowan Center at UT Tyler.
TMEA Middle School Solo and Ensemble Contest
On Friday, February 1, several BH Middle School Choir students competed at the TMEA Middle School Solo and Ensemble Contest in Tyler. The Brook Hill students earned 12 Superior Division medals and 2 Excellent Division ribbons. Students who competed were Graham Inglish, Michael Ayers, Linden Lee, Melissa Nelson, Alyssa Eden, Brianna Ridgeley, Jessica Tipton, Kristin Chambless, Timber Garner, and Baylee Rozell.
TMEA Middle School All-Region Orchestra
Congratulations to the following MS Orchestra students for earning a place in the TMEA All Region MS Orchestra – violinists, Michaela Tennison & David Hull; Cellist, David Eichelberger and string bassists, Daniel Sharpless & Mason Jones. Earning a top position as principal first chair bassist was Daniel Sharpless. Auditions were held on Saturday, Nov. 3rd at Kilgore HS with competitors from private studios, home-school and at least 7 different public school districts. These outstanding BH orchestra students will participate in the TMEA All Region concert on Saturday, January 26, 2008 at RE Lee High School.
