Baseball: Guard achieve playoff spot, finish second in district

Brook Hill varsity baseball qualified for the postseason by going on the road and defeating Tyler All Saints 6-1. The next day, the Guard were stopped by Tyler Grace Community to finish second overall in the district with the playoffs starting Wednesday.

Despite Brook Hill finishing tied for first place at the end of the regular season, a tiebreaker was used to determine who would move on into the playoffs. The Guard were tied with Tyler Grace and Tyler All Saints. A coin flip determined who got the first playoff spot. Brook Hill lost the flip, along with All Saints, so they were forced to play each other for the second spot in the postseason.

The loser of that game, despite being a shared district champion, would not go any further and their season would be over.

The Guard turned to Josh Jenkins and he did not falter, delivering six stellar innings on the mound, allowing one run with five strikeouts. Tyler Overbeek came on in the seventh inning to set All Saints down in order and secure the biggest win of the season!

Brook Hill never trailed in the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Reid Hill led off with a single and moved to third thanks to Seth Moss drawing a walk and Jenkins lifting a sacrifice fly. Hill then raced home on a wild pitch.

The Guard increased their advantage in second inning. With one out, Brooks Parham smacked a double to left followed by a single from Logan Fitzgerald to put runners on the corners. Hill plated Parham with a single to right field with Fitzgerald moving to third. He then came home on a sac fly from Moss. Brook Hill wasn’t finished with Jenkins punching a single to right field to score Hill for a 4-0 lead.

The score was 4-1 in the fourth when the Guard answered on an RBI groundout by Jenkins to score Hill and re-establish their four-run lead, at now 5-1.

Just for good measure, Brook Hill scored again in the fifth inning with Logan Langford drilling a double with one out and later coming home on an error.

Jenkins and Overbeek did the rest to knock All Saints out and move on to the first-place game against Tyler Grace.

That did not go as planned with Grace winning the game to secure the top seed in the district, but it did not damper a strong weekend for Brook Hill, which qualified for the playoffs for the eighth-straight year as the Guard look to make another return to state.

Brook Hill’s playoff opener is Wednesday at Frisco Legacy Christian Academy.
