Baseball: Guard season ends in regional loss to Fort Worth Christian

Brook Hill varsity baseball won its way into the playoffs following a three-way tie for first place in the district and went on the road to capture a victory in its first playoff game — the only team from TAPPS Division II District 3 to advance.

But the road ended in the regional round. Facing a Fort Worth Christian team that entered the postseason with a gaudy 38 wins, the Guard were stopped 15-0.

The loss end Brook Hill’s season at 17-11.

The Guard hurt themselves with five errors and eight walks as only three of the 15 runs allowed by Brook Hill pitching were earned.

Miguel Vega started the game and allowed four runs, one of them earned on four hits with two strikeouts. He was followed by Dakota Gillespie, Tyler Overbeek and Logan Langford.

Brook Hill’s bats were held in check by FWC. Logan Fitzgerald registered the lone hit for the Guard with Red Hill and Josh Jenkins also reaching base by walks. Langford reached on an error as Brook Hill stranded four runners overall.

The Guard trailed 1-0 after the top of the first when Jenkins drew a two-out walk in the bottom half. Cole Fitzgerald entered the game to courtesy run for Jenkins, but a ground out ended the chance.

Brook Hill’s deficit was 5-0 when the Guard came to bat in the bottom of the second. Langford led off and reached on an error, but a double play and ground out ended the inning.

Trailing 6-0 in the third, Fitzgerald singled with one out and moved to second on a walk to Reid Hill put two runners on. A wild pitch enabled Fitzgerald to move up to third base. With runners at the corners, Brook Hill’s next batter struck out followed by a fly out.

Fort Worth Christian continued to add to its lead until the game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.
