COLLEGE GUIDANCE PROGRAM

The Brook Hill School's College Guidance Program provides upper school students with one-on-one and group instructional time with the Academic Guidance Counselor. During this time, issues related to academic planning, college planning, test preparation, and the college process will be discussed.

9th grade

Students in the ninth grade will focus on high school academic and extracurricular planning. These students will be encouraged to develop and follow an academic plan and an extracurricular plan. By starting and maintaining a personal portfolio, students will begin creating, updating, and revising their college admission/scholarship résumé.

10th grade

Students in the tenth grade will focus on “setting themselves apart” in the college process. With topics including summer enrichment programs, mentoring, volunteering, and leadership, students will be able to choose activities outside of school that will communicate their passion to admissions professionals.

11th grade (College Quest)

Students in the eleventh grade will focus on a more in depth review of the college process. During monthly meetings, these students will learn what to expect when facing the college application and financial aid processes. Topics will include: college applications, finalizing résumés, writing essays, requesting letters of recommendation, scholarship searches and applications, and other financial aid programs. Students are encouraged to take the ACT or the SAT and to provide a short list of researched colleges/universities being considered for application.

12th grade (Senior Seminar)

Senior Seminar provides seniors with topical discussions related to specific aspects of the college admission process. The Academic Guidance Counselor and special guests from the college admission world will discuss issues related to college and financial aid planning. Seniors are encouraged to take the ACT or SAT in the fall semester and to apply to at least five colleges. Seniors will also have one-on-one meetings with the Academic Guidance Counselor to plan and review their college admission progress.
