Lower School Visual Arts

Lower School students who master the basics of drawing and design produce works of art in a variety of medium.  The Lower School has several programs allowing our students to shine.  The “Principal’s Pick” program:  At every new unit of study the principal picks about a dozen works that he “likes”.  These pictures are matted, framed, and displayed in our hallway and in a local restaurant.  During our “Fine Arts Gala” our students’ works are juried and given recognition.  Our students have also done very well in local poster contests, with winners going on to the state level.

Upper School Visual Arts

The Visual Arts program at Brook Hill is comprised of Art I-IV, a set of comprehensive and challenging courses covering both studio art and art history. Middle-school students begin with the basics of artistic elements, learning technique through daily drawing exercises, becoming familiar with great artwork and acquiring their own style and vision. In high school, students will build on this foundation to hone their particular gifts, practice technique, and delve deeper into the art of the Renaissance through the 20th-century. By the time students reach Art IV, the course will function as an independent study designed to help seniors build a portfolio, compete, find a college that suits their needs and perfect their own area of artistic interest. Students of all ages will experiment with different media including drawing, sculpture, painting, and mixed-media.

Annual field trips to the museum districts in Dallas and Fort Worth provide a pivotal opportunity to experience great art in person, and community and charity projects allow Brook Hill art students to participate in the artistic side of East Texas. Students will also participate in TAPPS and ACSI competitions, and may enter pieces in the East Texas State Fair creative exhibits as well as a myriad of local and national competitions. An extracurricular Art Club is also available for students who want to further develop their skills.
