Brook Hill lost its season opener in a heartbreaker, 43-40, Thursday to the St. Bernard’s Crusaders from Eureka, California.

The Guard started the game perfectly by stopping St. Bernard’s on its first possession. Senior Marion Falco sacked the quarterback to force a three-and-out.

Then senior Jacob Dumesnil returned the ensuing punt 43 yards for a touchdown. Caleb Chadwell made the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

A 27-yard field goal by Chadwell made it 10-0 Brook Hill with 3:10 left in the first quarter.

St. Bernard’s got on the board with a TD, but it was immediately answered by the Guard after senior Chase Moore recovered an onside kick attempt and senior receiver Seth Brasher caught a 33-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback McCray Fletcher. Chadwell’s PAT made the score 17-6 with 30 seconds to go in the first quarter.

An interception stopped Brook Hill’s next drive with the Crusaders going the other way 68 yards in eight plays to score and make the 2-point conversion for a 17-14 score.

Again Fletcher and Brasher had the answer on a 58-yard touchdown hookup. Chadwell’s PAT made the score 24-14 at halftime.

In the second half, the Crusaders once again pulled to within three points, 24 -21.

Brook Hill answered with a 31-yard field goal by Chadwell to increase its lead, 27-21.

The Crusaders took their first lead on a 3-yard touchdown run, but once again, it was short-lived because of Fletcher and Brasher. The quarterback and receiver connected for a 75-yard catch and run touchdown. Chadwell’s extra point make the score 34-28 with 5:35 remaining in the third quarter.

Two field goals (27, 38) by Chadwell increased Brook Hill’s lead to 37-28 with 10:01 remaining in the game.

The Crusaders cut Brook Hill’s lead to 40-35 with 1:35 remaining. St. Bernard’s then recovered an onside kick to score again with 10 seconds remaining.

The loss dropped the Guard to 0-1.
