Guard score early, often in opening-round playoff win

FORT WORTH — Brook Hill took care of its first playoff opponent in demolition-fashion, scoring two more runs in five of seven innings to overpower Fort Worth Christian, 13-5.

The win advanced the Guard (17-8) into the TAPPS 4A semifinals Saturday against Fort Worth Southwest Christian (21-14-1).

Mason Smith did the job on the mound for Brook Hill in the win over FW Christian, surrendering just three earned runs in six innings of work, while allowing seven hits and striking out two. Reid Hill made sure of the victory with a scoreless seventh inning.

Parker Clark doubled twice and scored five runs for the Guard with Miguel Vega scoring four runs, thanks to being intentionally walked three times.

The Guard did not waste time asserting themselves, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

McCray Fletcher was hit by a pitch to lead off. Smith doubled home Fletcher for a 1-0 lead. The Guard eventually loaded the bases, despite Smith being caught stealing, thanks to walks to Clark, Vega and Seth Brasher.

The fourth walk to Josh Jenkins plated a run and kept the bases loaded. Tyler Overbeek made it 3-0 when he also drew a bases-loaded walk.

It’s lead cut to 3-2 in the bottom of the first, Brook Hill hung another two runs on the board in the second inning. With two outs, Clark doubled followed by an intentional walk to Vega. Brasher followed with a ball hit to second base that led to a two-run error and 5-2 lead.

The Guard made it 8-3 in the fourth inning with Clark’s second double of the game starting things off. Clark eventually scored on an error. Jenkins hit a sac fly to drive in Vega after he was intentionally walked for the third time. Overbeek singled home Seth Brasher.

Any chance the home side of making a comeback was extinguished by Brook Hill in the fifth inning. With two outs, Smith singled and courtesy runner Campbell Fletcher eventually came around to score on a single by Vega. Consecutive wild pitches plated both Clark, who had walked, and Vega for a 11-3 lead.

The Guard tacked on their final two runs in the seventh with Campbell Fletcher scoring on a wild pitch and Clark reaching on an single and eventually scoring by stealing home.
