Lower
School Mathematics Curriculum
Since
God has created much in the world we live in to be orderly and
logical and number plays a crucial role in every life endeavors
from higher level thinking to the practical everyday skills, lower
school scholars at The Brook Hill School will learn to think quantitatively
and understand “numberness.” Students will develop a conceptual
understanding of whole and rational numbers through a balanced
program of hands-on learning and foundational skill development.
They will develop the ability to know how and when to use correct
operations accurately including basic computations in arithmetic.
Students will be proficient in solving real world and contrived
mathematically-based problems along with the ability to logically
connect math concepts with real world situations. They will develop
positive attitudes about mathematics not just because teachers
use enjoyable hands-on activities but also because students will
realize mathematics makes sense, is useful, and is worthwhile.
