SOCIAL STUDIES
Curriculum Intro

Social Studies is one of the most difficult subjects to teach at the lower School level because of the extensive amount of content teachers must cover. Students often shy away from it because of the sheer volume of facts, concepts and information and the boring manner in which it is often taught.

Conversely though, the Social Studies is one of the more exciting subjects to cover because of its close connection to our heritage and every day lives that define us as a people, a community, a region, and a country. Student scholars enjoy studying people and the history, economics, government (politics), and geography associated with those people..

The Brook Hill School’s social studies curriculum, using the Social Studies Alive and History Alive programs from Teacher’s Curriculum Institute, is full of interactive activities that allow students to better grasp historical concepts and remember important details about history and geography. It is a research based program based on high level concepts and historical information. Students both enjoy the topic and learn at a higher thinking level because they are interacting with the concepts at age appropriate levels.  Understanding and learning foundations, application of concepts to life around them, and some traditionally valued information are keystones to the Brook Hill social studies program.
