Softball: Lady Guard get walk-off win on Senior Night

The Lady Guard were not going to allow Slocum to ruin their Senior Night.

Trailing 7-5 in the bottom of the seventh, Brook Hill scored three runs to win 8-7. The game-winning run was a walk-off hit by pitch from Maddie Anthony which scored Kyndel Clayton.

Brook Hill looked to be in control of the game, leading 5-1 before Slocum scored three runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to take the lead.

The Lady Guard began things by tying the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second. Brook Hill drew three straight walks by Micah Lovelady, Kyndel Clayton and Cassie Cannon before Anthony delivered a single to score Lovelady.

The score stayed tied until the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Kaitlynn Juarez walked and Anthony followed with a deep driver over the left-fielder’s head that turned into an inside-the-park home run, scoring her and Juarez for Brook Hill’s first lead of the game, 3-1.

The Lady Guard made it 4-1 in the fifth. AD Kuechle singled to lead off and went to second on a sac bunt from Lovelady. That put her in scoring position for Brianna Young who responded with an RBI single.

The game was tied 4-4 when in the sixth when Brook Hill went back in front 5-4 on an RBI single from Kasey Anderson to score Anthony, who reached by being hit by a pitch.

Trailing again in their final at-bat, the Lady Guard refused to give in. Alyssa Duplichain led off with a double and went to third on a single from Kuechle. A sac fly from Lovelady scored Duplichain to cut the deficit to one run, 7-6. The Lady Guard eventually loaded the bases, but looked to be in trouble when a runner was thrown out trying to steal home.

So with two outs, Cannon stepped to the plate. She was hit by a pitch to re-load the bases. Vanna Dean dug in, and on a 1-1 pitch, the ball went wide of the catcher, enabling Young to race home for the game-tying run. Dean eventually walked to re-load the bases again.

Anthony now had a chance to end it. On a 3-0 pitch, Anthony was plunked to drive in the winning run. Anderson got the win in the circle, going the distance while allowing seven runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts.

The Lady Guard (20-7) now turn their attention to the playoffs. Brook Hill opens against Frisco Legacy Christian at home later this week.
