SPARC Across the Nation
Brook Hill Upper School students traveled across our great nation to learn and grow in knowledge and Christ-like character. Students traveled with our Founder, Stephen Dement, to the East Coast where they spent time learning about courage, character & leadership through the lens of the 1864 Battle of New Market. On the campus of Virginia Military Institute (VMI), students studied the courage of other students their age in years past through lectures from VMI faculty. Students also spent time in Washington DC and other historic sites like Gettysburg and Washington’s Home in Mt Vernon.
Other Students also had the opportunity to visit Boston. Students toured the campus of Harvard University, saw historic sites, and enjoyed the sites of one of America’s greatest cities. Some students also took an out-of-state college tour with their peers, visiting universities like OU, Yale, and others.
Two trips took on the great outdoors and sought to instill Christ-like character in our young men. Brook Hill’s Headmaster, Rod Fletcher, and Director of Residence Life, Shawn Rhoads, lead a trip to Catalina Island in California away from cell phone coverage to catch fish, hike rugged terrain, swim with dolphins, kayak along the coastline, and most of all to explore what it means to be a man of God. Director of Campus Life & Ministry Jordy Barksdale along with Biology Teacher & Coach Kyle Ford took a group of young men to Tennessee to hike the Appalachians, explore waterfalls, and go whitewater rafting – all the while discussing how God has designed humanity and how to live life according to his purpose.
Our Science & Adventure SPARC explored local science and nature facilities in the East Texas Area. From the Caldwell Zoo, Athens Fish Hatchery, Tyler State Park, East Texas Arboretum, to the New York Texas Zip Line Adventure and Tyler Nature Preserve, students enjoyed and studied the natural habitats of East Texas.
