Skull Lab

October 30, 2013

5th graders dissected owl pellets this week as part of their study of different ecosystems.  At first it seemed gross, but they quickly adjusted and had a great time finding the bones! Once students dissected the pellets, they classified the skulls to determine what the owl ate.  After this each student classified the bones by placing […]

Aquatic Ecosystems at Brook Hill

October 24, 2013

The AP Environmental Science class has been learning about the importance of certain insects that start their lives in the bottom of streams and ponds. They took a short walk to the pond in front of Founder’s Hall this week to get a first-hand look at these insects. They found many different types of organisms […]

Thermochemistry

October 24, 2013

The AP Chemistry class has been studying thermochemistry, during which they have learned how heat is involved in chemical reactions. In order to get some hands-on experience they went to the lab this week to test some different ingredients for hand warmers, a perfect study now that it is beginning to get cool outside.

6th Grade Science Rocks!

October 18, 2013

6th graders have been studying the rock cycle and learning to classify them as igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic. Sixth grade science rocks!

5th Grade Tests Paper Towels

October 18, 2013

This week 5th graders wrote their own experiment to test for the best paper towels in science class. Some tested absorbency while others tested strength. What great practice for writing experiments to prepare our students for writing their own plans for the science fair!

5th Graders Test for Starch

October 10, 2013

In our Lower School Science Lab, 5th graders tested for the presence of starch in different foods. This lab reinforced a lesson on photosynthesis and showed the real-life effects of the process. Students learned that plants store extra glucose in the form of starch. What a unique way to interact with scientific principles in the […]

Investigating the Leaf

October 02, 2013

To help our 5th grade students understand scientific concepts about plants, Mrs. Wallace devised a mystery case the students needed to use leaves to solve. As the story goes, a robber had escaped and the only evidence police had on the suspects were leaves stuck to the trucks’ tires. In order to solve the case […]

Young Scientists at Work

September 19, 2013

In 4th grade science, the students observed different soils to learn about soil profiles and then they tested the sediment rate in a graduated cylinder filled with water.

6th Grade Inferring Lab

September 09, 2013

Our 6th graders conducted an inferring lab in Mrs. Wallace’s science class. They observed and interacted with four different liquids to infer what each liquid was.
