6th Science Studies Rock Cycle

Sixth graders did a rock cycle lab this week using different kinds of chocolate morsels to represent the various minerals in a rock.  First, students weathered their rocks and then layered them in a piece of foil.  They placed books on top to apply pressure like layering in the real world.  Students then examined their “sedimentary rock.”  Next, they applied heat and pressure by smashing their rocks with their hands and squeezing those morsels.  Next, they examined their “metamorphic rock.”  Lastly, they placed their rock in a hot griddle and it was allowed to melt and then cool resulting in an “igneous rock.”  The students enjoyed the tasty and good smelling way to study the rock cycle.
