7th Graders Study Immigration
Last week we shared about Mrs. Mattay’s 7th graders studying immigration. This week, Mrs. Figueroa’s students participated in a similar simulation, but focusing on Texas instead of the United States as a whole. Students participated in an exciting simulation in which they assumed various political roles that required them to make life-impacting and world-changing decisions about allowing refugees into the state of Texas. Students weighed all aspects of the decision from humanitarian desires, to cultural and economic impacts, and even political consequences. Students worked in pairs to research major immigrant groups that arrived in Texas between the mid-18th Century and late 20th Century before creating a Texas Immigration Culture Quilt. The quilt highlights the wide variety of cultural contributions and cultural diffusion brought by immigrants to Texas.
