A Look Ahead for 2016 in the Middle
From the desk of Tammy Hayes, Middle School Principal:
Welcome to the Second Semester & 2016 in the Middle!
This middle school year has been one of new developments, new ideas, implementing new technologies into our culture, and welcoming new faculty to join our mission. It’s been a wonderful school year already, and there is so much more on the way.
Here are just a few highlights of what has already happened that we can celebrate:
- We added new 70 inch flat screen televisions to both Ornelas and Lauderdale where middle school students can see the weekly schedule and get announcements for upcoming events.
- We trained middle school faculty and students on Moodle, a learning management system that with continued training, will enhance instruction both at school and from home.
- We hired an academic director of competition, Mrs. Robin Bynum, to lead us into the world of academic competitions and began holding weekly practices to prep us for a qualifying meet and ultimately for an April contest against our private school counterparts, Grace, Gorman, and All Saints.
- We welcomed Mr. Jordy Barksdale to our faculty in the role of Campus Life and Ministry, introducing our students to a great role model and teacher of God’s word in their school life.
- We also welcomed new faculty, Mrs. Whitney Figueroa, Alumni, Mrs. Erica Mattay, & Dr. Rozanna May to our middle school faculty. All have been a wonderful addition to our Brook Hill family. Regretfully, Dr. May had to resign due to health issues both personally and with her family. We will miss her greatly. Her replacement to be welcomed temporarily is Mrs. Elizabeth Avila. She comes to us a native Spanish speaker and certified teacher. She will be the long-term substitute for 7th & 8th grade Spanish until a full-time teacher is found.
- We held our first ever PSIA Academic Qualifying meet on Friday, January 15th. All MS students competed in subjects of their choice. The top performers in each category will be invited to continue preparing to go to our District meet on April 1st!
Here are some upcoming events that promise an exciting second semester as well:
- January 29th- Club Friday Fair during Campus Life Block (2:30-3:00) in the Student Center-students will sign up for a club of choice to attend throughout the spring semester on the following Fridays.
- Club Friday dates are: Jan. 29, Feb. 5 & 19, March 5 & 25, April 1, 15, & 29, and May 6!
- February 25th – Middle School Mega Riot!
- March – SPARC & OASIS Week which includes our spring service project day!
- April – Middle School Spring Event – Brook Hill’s 1st Cannonball Run! A spring scavenger hunt you won’t want to miss! Stay tuned for date!
- May 20-26 – Middle School Exam Week
- May 25th – Middle School Awards & 8th grade Promotion Ceremony
All in all, I am reminded as I look back at our beginning and ahead to our finish that our students are in the process of becoming all God has for them to be in a wonderful place with dedicated faculty and supportive families. And, for all of it, I’m grateful and tremendously blessed to get to be a part of it at The Brook Hill School!
