A Mini Parade of Nations Every Day
From the desk of Shawn Rhoads, Director of Residence Life:
As I was pulling onto campus one morning, I stopped, as many of you have done, to let some of our boarding students pass at the cross walk. As we waved back and forth it occurred to me that this is another unique occurrence that we might take for granted. Each day, right there at that crosswalk, there is a mini Parade of Nations that we get to enjoy. I started listing the countries of the kids I was seeing. There was Nigeria, and the Philippines, Congo and Pakistan, Cameroon and Venezuela, and on and on. We get to see a glimpse of the world each morning and afternoon pass right before us every day. The symbolism of a crosswalk also went through my mind. Each day these students take this crosswalk to get to their classes, where they learn about the work of the cross, and the way of the cross from the people of the cross. There is true significance to that daily crossing.
In the future, if you are delayed a bit by a hand full of boarding students crossing in front of you, take in what is happening as you watch the nations pass before you, going to and from class, sports, study hall or dinner. Maybe say a prayer for these kids, many of whom are thousands of miles away from home to be here with us. What a cool opportunity we have each day to share our school with this unique group of young people from around the world who now call Brook Hill home.
