Balancing Nurture and Rigor

From the desk of Rod Fletcher, Headmaster:

Last week I wrote that one of the main things that makes Brook Hill distinct is that we are both Christ-centered and college preparatory – something that many Christian schools don’t balance very well.

Another balancing act that schools often get wrong is the balance between having teachers and coaches who are caring on one hand but expect high quality and performance on the other.

At Brook Hill this is exactly what we strive for. When hiring at Brook Hill we often talk about “fit” – and to “fit” at Brook Hill a teacher or coach needs to have that balance between nurture and rigor.

We have recently received our constituent surveys back (more on that at a later date) and I was incredibly encouraged to see that our community described our faculty and staff as having that balance.

A specific example of this will take place Saturday, February 28 at 3:00pm in Waco, TX. The Varsity Boys Soccer Team will head onto the field to compete in the TAPPS Soccer Championship Game – and they will be led onto the field by their Head Coach, David Collins.

David is an example of this balance. He demands and expects excellence as evidenced by the fact that he is coaching in his third state championship game in three years. His players live up to his expectations and he is able to motivate them to purse excellence – and win. But that is not all there is to David Collins. He loves and cares for his players deeply and they know it. The nurture and care that David displays is made obvious by the thriving relationships that he has with is players year after year and the relationships that he has with alumni that last well beyond graduation.

I am thankful for David Collins and the rest of the faculty and staff that strive for this balance on a daily balance. Teachers and Coaches like him are part of what makes Brook Hill the school it is today. Even more than that, however, teachers and coaches like David are shaping the kind of school Brook Hill will continue to be tomorrow.
