Chemistry Recreates the Periodic Table

In chemistry we are currently learning about the how the periodic table was originally developed, so students re-created the circumstances in which Dmitri Mendeleev first recognized the repetitive patterns of properties of the elements. The students were given cards with nine different physical and chemical properties of 32 elements and asked to organize the cards in a way that demonstrated a consistent pattern of order and similarity of properties. They essentially created their own periodic table of 32 elements getting a taste of the frustration that can come with trying to figure something out and the satisfaction of eventually succeeding. Mr. Bunger hopes they can better appreciate the genius of Mendeleev who first organized the elements over 140 years ago!
