Do Not Be Unsettled

From the desk of Rod Fletcher, Headmaster:

Like everyone, I am acquainted with trials and hardships. Through the years I have come to expect suffering as a necessary part of life in a fallen world. But I have also seen God use trials to transform me into more of the man he has called me to be.

As a headmaster I deal with difficult situations and decisions on a regular basis, and I am always thankful for your prayers, trust, and support. Sometimes, these situations can become confusing and even seem to spiral outside of my control. This is a scary place for me – I like to be in control, knowing my next move, and staying a step ahead.

It is in this scary place, however, that I am forced to realize I was never in control in the first place. God was, is, and always will be in control. And isn’t that where God wants us to be – dependent on Him? God is in control of all things, right?

It is easy to believe God is in control when things are going our way – but it is much harder when they are not. I believe that God has his hand on Brook Hill – I have witnessed it time and time again. However, that does not mean that trials will not occur at Brook Hill. We know that firsthand.

God is concerned with our response to suffering and trials. And what response does he desire? Not fear, anxiety, and worry – but love, thankfulness and faith.

As Paul shared with the Corinthian believers during a time of trouble:

“But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.” – 2 Corinthians 1:9-11

We should not be “unsettled by these trials” (1 Thessalonians 3:3). We should stand firm, rely on God, and walk our talk that “God is faithful.” This is hard to do. This is not my default. But this is the right thing to do and what we are called to do.
