Earthquake Lab in 6th Grade

Students were given a challenge in sixth grade earth science this week.  Students modified a cereal box which represented a skyscraper so it can withstand a moderate earthquake.  Materials available were rubber bands, string, cotton balls, pennies, pencils, wooden rulers and straws.  Students were given about 15 minutes to construct their buildings before the quake. Mrs. Wallace said the excitement and “planning noise”  were music to her ears. Student need to be encouraged to think creatively and problem solve, and activities like this help accomplish that purpose!  Many groups were successful with their “buildings” and they did withstand the simulated earthquake!IMG_5700.JPG
