Environmental Science Goes to the Pond

In Mr. Bunger’s environmental science class we have been talking about pH and other factors that affect the animals that live in our lakes and rivers. An excellent indicator of water quality is the abundance of certain insects that spend part of their lives in the water like dragonflies and mayflies. We are blessed at Brook Hill to have two ponds where we can get real experience with these types of issues, so we went in search of these bottom-dwelling insects. The students were able to obtain samples of the sediments at the pond’s edge and then sort through the sample to find multiple insect species which indicate that we have a healthy aquatic environment in the pond in front of Founder’s Hall.
