Lower School had a Fine Arts week chapel

This week Lower School students participated in Fine Arts Week. Students had the opportunity to attend many fine arts related performances throughout the week. A school-wide art show is on display revealing what students have been making in art so far this year. On Wednesday, students attended a special chapel where music and art awards were given. Upper school students also came to chapel to perform for them. This is a list of the art awards and winners for 2017.

2017 MUSIC AWARDS

The Johann Sebastian Bach Award: J. S. Bach was a very determined young man born in 1685. He learned to play and write music by the light of the moon. He was eager to learn all he could about music and worked all of his life to master it. Today I am giving these awards to students in music who have shown a great desire to learn as much about music as they can.

The Ludwig van Beethoven Award: Ludwig van Beethoven was born in 1770 in Germany and grew up to change the way music was written in his time. He was not the sort to do what everyone else was doing. This independent spirit was very important in helping him bring about what we call the Romantic Era in music. Today I am giving these awards to students in music who have been willing to be individuals and blaze their own trails with their music making.

The Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Award: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in 1756 and was a rock star in his own time. He toured with his father Leopold playing for royalty and the wealthy at the age of 6. He had a great musical memory, amazing instrumental skills, and he knew it. Today I am giving these awards to students in music who have been confident in their musical abilities and have accepted any musical challenge before them.

2017 ARTIST AWARDS

WALT DISNEY AWARD: Walt Disney was a 20th Century American animator, entrepreneur, voice actor, and film producer. His films, theme parks, and cartoon creations continue to inspire and bring happiness to people world-wide. There is no doubt that Disney was creative and successful, but he came against many obstacles in his life. However, quitting was never an option for Disney; he worked diligently and kept striving until he saw his ideas and dreams come to life. The students receiving this award are overcomers. When they meet a challenge, their positive attitude and “can do spirit” help them complete every assignment with excellence.

LEONARDO DA VINCI AWARD: Leonardo da Vinci, the Renaissance painter of The Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, is widely considered to be one of the greatest artists of all time. While he was interested in drawing, painting, and sculpting, he also studied botany, architecture, engineering, mathematics, and more. He filled notebooks with scientific discoveries, ideas for inventions, and drawings. He was always studying and learning something new-his mind eager to take on a new challenge. Like Leonardo da Vinci the students receiving this award are known for their creative and unique approach and solutions to assignments. Their passion to create turns the wheels of their brains, and as a result, their artworks are always full of energy and excitement.

Mary Cassatt Award: Mary Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker who lived from 1844 to 1926. Her family lived in Europe for many years. In 1855 she attended the World Fair in France where she met artists Degas and Pissarro who later became her mentors. After seeing so much art in her travels, she decided to pursue an art career. Though her family did not approve of this decision, her commitment to becoming a professional artist did not waver. She attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia and moved to Paris to study privately. Cassatt is best known for her portraits of everyday people, particularly images emphasizing the intimate bonds between mothers and children. The students receiving this award are dedicated to taking the time and effort that are necessary to producing well-made and touching works of art. They are caring and loving in their work and spirit.

The next award category is the School-Wide Theme Show. This year’s theme was “The Still Life”. A still life is an artwork about a group of inanimate objects. Students looked at artwork from famous still life artists like Paul Cezanne and Pieter Claesz before making their own art. Several teachers were asked to judge the still life pictures. All student names were covered and judges were asked to rate the artworks from 1-5 in the areas of craftsmanship and creativity. These are the grade level winners.
