Mr. Bunger’s chemistry students have been learning how to calculate the formula of a compound from data generated during a lab experiment. Students got some hands-on experience by burning magnesium in the lab to produce magnesium oxide. Careful mass measurements by the students produced lab data that was then used to calculate the formula of magnesium oxide. This lab is usually a memorable one for the students because the magnesium burns with a brilliant white light.
