Middle School Experiments

Sixth graders have been learning about heat transfer in science class this week.  To further their understanding, students tested out the position of a chocolate chip relative to a heat source and predicted and then observed the melting pattern.  Students then moved their heat source and tried predicting a second time.  During this lab, students observed heat transfer through conduction and radiation.  Convection was observed through a demonstration.

Eighth graders also took an experimental approach to learning in class this week. Students had an opportunity to see firsthand how craters form on the moon by dropping different size marbles from different heights.  They measured the size of the crater formed in the flour each time it was dropped.  This experiment is a good way to reinforce how different features appeared on the surface of the moon and a good chance to practice their measurement skills.
