Middle School on the GO: Grades and Organization- What Matters and Why

On Wednesday and Thursday Coach Barrow and Mrs. Mize presented a seminar to every middle school student covering the topics of grades and organization. What does it mean to be a GO student? The middle school students learned what matters and why in terms of the skills and habits successful people incorporate and learn in order to cut back on the number of unexpected, unpleasant surprises.

Students were given examples of good surprises like finding extra money in their pockets they didn’t know was there or getting a higher grade than expected on an assignment. On the flip side, students were given examples of unpleasant surprises like showing up to a sold out movie they really wanted to see or an unexpected test. Although life will always be full of surprises, the tips presented to the students were helpful for cutting back on the number of unexpected, unpleasant surprises.

Mrs. Mize and Coach Barrow went through a series of practical organizational steps that are fundamental for building the framework to be a successful student.

Students were showed and explained how their progress will always be tracked and all that goes into a grade. They learned what skills they can acquire and use to help support good grades and future success in their endeavors. Last, students were given an initiative sheet that contained check list items for them to complete each Sunday that will help them take the first steps to being an informed, responsible, and organized student.

Mrs. Mize said, “One of the biggest tough lessons I learned as a student was that my grades were just as much tied to my ability, or lack thereof, to organize, prioritize, and keep up with my classes. Even as an adult, I see where success can be closely tied to practical organizational habits. I do love a good surprise, but I also like to take control of those unexpected, unpleasant surprises that can be avoided. We live in a very busy age, so my hope is that the middle school students were able to see that a few proactive initiatives will really help make a positive difference in their day to day responsibilities and help them cut back on those unpleasant surprises.”
