Pop Art in Art 1 & 2

Here is a little art history about the Pop Art Movement from the 1960’s: everyone knows Andy Warhol, but do you know about Claes Oldenburg? This week, our Art 1 & 2 students learned about Claes Oldenburg who was the premier sculptor of the Pop Art Movement (pop stands for popular). Pop Art was about American overabundance that our European peers did not understand.

Our sculptors started creating by brainstorming 3 good ideas, and choosing the one they thought would be the most successful. Next, students built an armature using various materials such as newspaper, tape wire, scrap mat board and cardboard. Students are now adding 3 layers of paper mache which is made of newspaper strips and rice paste that will make the sculpture stiff, stable, and well crafted. Students will eventually paint the finished product and add embellishments to enhance the believability of the object. We have some great ideas going and we can’t wait to see the finished product!
