Pre-AP Biology Studies Eggs

Pre AP Biology students observed the process of osmosis using the decalcified eggs in the lab. Students learned how the membrane of the egg mimics a cell membrane. In osmosis water will move from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration. Eggs were placed in solutions with various concentrations of water and solutes. In solutions that contained more solutes and less water (hypertonic solution) than the egg, the egg lost water. In solutions with solute concentrations less than the egg (hypotonic solution) the egg gained water. This concept was applied to a real world situation as we discussed why the common IV solution, normal saline, is isotonic – having the same water and solute concentration as the body.
