Something to be Joyful About

From the desk of Rod Fletcher, Headmaster:

In his letter to the Philippians, Paul proclaims his joy upon remembering the church in Philippi: I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

– Philippians 1:3-6

I feel this same sense of joy whenever I hear from our alumni, and the start of this spring semester has been no exception. Since many of our alumni are still home for Christmas break, over the past two weeks I have invited them to sit down with our seniors during our Senior Transitions Course to talk about life after Brook Hill. Whether they are in college or have already graduated and are in the working world, our alumni are not only successful, but they have a lot of wisdom to offer our seniors. Our alumni report that they are prepared for the rigors of college academics, can balance athletics and course work, are able to manage their time, and even navigate their transitions into careers and adulthood. But, even more than that, our alumni are continuing to grow and deepen their faith.

As a headmaster, nothing could bring me greater joy than to hear of our alumni’s success and maturity. We spend so much time investing in our students during their time with us, and when they graduate we have to release them from our care. As a parent of a senior this year, I feel the weight of this even more. I’m left wondering, “Did I do all that I could?” “Are they ready?”

I am reminded in these moments that it is not all up to me, and I am forced to trust and depend on God through prayer. Then, when our alumni return, I have the privilege of seeing how God has continued to work in their lives, to guide them and lead them where they should go. It reminds me of God’s faithfulness, his love, and of the importance of what we are doing here at Brook Hill. May we continue to strive for excellence, so that our students are not only prepared for college, but for life, enabling them to live fully for Christ and his Kingdom.
