Technology and Fractions in Mrs. Mize’s Math Class

Mrs. Mize’s math classes visited the computer lab on Monday to integrate and apply technology with fractions. The students just finished a unit on factors and fractions and to wrap up the chapter, students were paired with a partner and instructed to conduct a survey of 30 people and track the results then display the results as fractions. Sample survey questions included the following: “What is your favorite color?” “What is your favorite season?” “What is your favorite Scooby Doo character?” and “What month were you born?” From there the students went to the computer lab and learned how to use the chart feature in Microsoft Word to display their findings using a digital chart. The students were allowed freedom in choosing which chart they wanted to use. They were also allowed to be creative with changing layouts, font type, legend formats, and border options.

Mrs. Mize said, “It was so much fun to see the students learn through imagination, creativity, and clicking! They were amazed at themselves for finding and learning how to use the different functions of Microsoft Word. There are so many great applications for this technology when we get to future units on percents, ratios, and probabilities. This was a great project to have the students complete because they were able to familiarize themselves with the technology and will be ready to use it again during the upcoming units.”
