Brook Hill varsity baseball took a break from district play Friday to face Palmer. The Guard fell behind 7-2 before nearly rallying back with a dramatic final at-bat in which the Guard scored four runs before ultimately succumbing 7-6.
The loss dropped Brook Hill to 10-6 on the season with the Guard returning to TAPPS Division II District 3 play Tuesday against Tyler Bishop Gorman.
Brooks Parham had three doubles for the Guard as part of a four-hit day against Palmer with Josh Jenkins and Seth Moss delivering three hits apiece. Moss drove in two with Jenkins finishing with a double, a run scored and an RBI.
Reid Hill took the loss on the mound, allowing six runs – only three of them earned – on seven hits with one walk. Dakota Gillespie and Tyler Overbeek combined for 2 and 2/3 innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts.
Brook Hill trailed 2-0 entering the fourth inning when the Guard tied things up with a sacrifice fly from Seth Moss, scoring Campbell Fletcher and an RBI double from Parham that scored Tyler Overbeek.
The Guard’s deficit was 7-2 when BH batted in the top of the seventh. Reid Hill begin things with a single to left followed by a walk to Logan Fitzgerald. Jenkins kept things rolling with an RBI single to left that scored Hill.
Miguel Vega beat on a single to load the bases for Fletcher, who got enough on a fly ball out to right field to drive in Fitzgerald and make it 7-4.
An Overbeek ground out scored Jenkins to make it 7-5 with now to outs and Vega at third. The Guard were not finished with Moss lacing a single past third base to score Vega and make it 7-6, putting BH within a run of a memorable comeback. Parham followed with a single to put two runners on. A wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third before a flyout to right field ended the game.
