Classes tune in to watch Donald Trump become President of the United States

Many students and faculty all throughout Brook Hill were able to stream the inauguration of the 45th president today. To teachers of all subjects, this was important enough to pause class and watch.

“This is a historic day, and this is very important – and I teach math,” Williford said. “They’ve been clapping and enjoying it, and I just think it’s important that they view this.”

Seniors Jordan Day and Jeffery Sonola stood with their hands over their hearts during the national anthem. Both of them sat front row, close to the screen, and soaked in the importance of what was unfolding before their eyes.

“One day we will tell our kids that we got to watch the inauguration of Donald Trump,” Day said. “This will be a turn in history compared to previous presidents.”

“I’m surprised that with all of the movements and laws that have been passed…[our country] is still coming back to a God culture,” Sonola said. “You’re just thinking, ‘Should our government be allowing that stuff if we’re coming back to acknowledge God at the end of the day?'”

Some classes, such as Mr. Dement’s, had a different purpose to watching the inauguration. They were watching it even after the main portion was over as he was able to explain to them what was happening step by step and what this means for our nation.

“We’re watching it to verify that what we’ve been discussing in government is actually true because during the whole inaugural process – especially Mr. Trump’s speech – he affirmed many of the things that are foundational to our country,” Dement said.

The idea that everyone is created equal, sovereignty of the people, limited government, acknowledgement of a Creator and the need for virtuous leaders are all things that have been being discussed in his class that came up in President Trump’s speech.

“It’s a really important day in our history,” senior Lauren Eden said. “Getting to see the peaceful transition of power first hand instead of just talking about it is really important.”
