Guard blast Tyler Bishop Gorman to clinch share of league title

Needing a win to clinch at least a share of the TAPPS 2-4A title, Brook Hill did not give Tyler Bishop Gorman a chance to play spoiler.

Helped by six Gorman errors and a three-hit night by Miguel Vega, the Guard cruised to an 21-1 win on Thursday. The victory gave Brook Hill a 10-4 record in district, which tied the Guard for first with Tyler All Saints and Frisco Legacy Christian.

The game was called after the fifth inning because of the 10-run rule.

In his final regular-season game, senior Seth Brasher homered, scored three runs and had 2 RBIs. Senior Ryan Cox also drove in two runs while Reid Hill took care of things on the mound to get the win. Hill went three scoreless innings before handing it over to Logan Langford for the final two.

Hill, Brasher and Parker Clark also finished with two hits a piece.

Brook Hill was held scoreless in the first, but scored two or more runs in the remaining four frames.

In a 0-0 game in the top of the second, Vega led off with a single and went to third on a single by Brasher. Brasher then stole second with one out for Cox, who did enough with his groundout to get Vega home and put the Guard in front, 1-0.

Campbell Fletcher followed with a ball to shortstop, which was booted to allow Brasher to score for a 2-0 lead.

The Guard tacked on four more runs in the third with Clark delivering a one-out double to get things started. Vega followed with a single to score Clark. Brasher then stepped to the plate and annihilated the first pitch he saw for a two-run homer to left field.

Brook Hill was not finished as Josh Jenkins singled and Campbell Fletcher followed with a two-out single. With runners on the corners, Hill smacked an RBI double to left field that scored Jenkins to make it 6-0.

With the game in hand, Brook Hill kept adding to its lead, scoring three more in the fourth inning, all unearned runs thanks to four Gorman errors.

The Guard capped their performance with the requisite runs needed to put the 10-run rule into effect. Vega doubled and scored on an error with Logan Langford driving home Logan Fitzgerald with a single. The final run was scored by Ryan Cox, who came home when McCray Fletcher was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Brook Hill now waits to see who it will face in the playoffs.
