SPARC Around the World
Brook Hill students had the opportunity to travel abroad this SPARC Week to two different locations: Costa Rica and Ireland.
Students traveled with Miss Massingil and Coach K to sunny Costa Rica where the jungle meets the beach. We enjoy whitewater rafting, beautiful beaches, active volcanoes, South America’s longest zip line and whale watching. We spent time in Monteverde, the Osa Peninsula, Montezuma, and Limon.
Other students traveled with Mrs. McHugh to Belfast, Northern Ireland. Debate and Journalism were emphasized throughout the trip as we studied the Catholic/Protestant conflict, evaluated various types of media used to spread the ideas of both sides, and discussed the bias evident in the journalistic coverage.
While in Northern Ireland, students attended both a Protestant and Catholic church and sat down with clergy and citizens on both sides of the conflict. Students also studied the local news sources including comics, graffiti, art, and propaganda. Students also had the opportunity to take a day trip to The Giant’s Causeway along the coast and attended a St. Patrick’s Day parade.
