Buffalos, Eels, & Sharks – Oh My!!

RodFletcherPortraits(TA)-11

From the desk of Rod Fletcher, Headmaster:

Island adventure turned out to be the theme of last week’s Senior Trip to Catalina Island off the coast of California.  From swimming with sharks, to hiking steep hills and running from buffalo, to catching moray eels with bare hands, the trip was marked by confronting fears, overcoming obstacles, and working together to face challenges.  What an incredible time of bonding and growth as we spent a week together in a tight-knit community isolated in cove on a desert island.

The greatest adventure for me, however, was encountering Christ with my young friends in an environment free from the distractions of daily life.  No cell service, televisions, cars or roads – a totally different experience than “regular life.”  The experience was sort of like biting into a watermelon on a hot summer day when thirst is very real.  The sensation is almost shocking.  Without distractions priorities became clear, character was revealed, and Christ was center –now that’s an adventure.  The real adventure, we determined, was living with this heightened sense of “clarity” in our culture of distractions.  We prayed, and I continue to pray, that those of us who experienced the week on the island will continue to see clearly what is “real.”  This senior class is extraordinary – I think they can do it!
