Crushing Cans in 8th Grade

Eight grade physical science students crushed cans on Thursday to observe pressure changes and changes of state in matter.  In honor of playing Grace this week in football, Kade Carpenter wrote Grace Cougars on his can so we could “crush” Grace.  Experiments were also done to further illustrate air pressure by pouring water into a cup and placing an index card on the bottom of the glass and observing how the card held the water inside the glass due to air pressure being greater underneath the card than in the glass.  Lastly, students placed a glass over a burning candle in a pan of water and watched the temperature difference result in a pressure difference causing the water to be pushed inside the glass.  Eighth graders observed that “pressure” in science class is actually pretty awesome!
