Lower School students are practicing their self portraits

Kindergarten and 1st graders are in the process of making a monochromatic self-portrait with lines in the background. Each class has been assigned a different color of the rainbow to color their artworks. Once all the classes have completed their art, the portraits will make a giant rainbow display. The first couple of days we studied different lines that artists use and covered an entire page with our favorite lines using various values of the same color.

Then we used guidelines to help us get the facial features in the correct place and the right size. We used mirrors and drew hair and other distinguishing features. Next, students need to color the portraits, cut them out, and glue them to the monochromatic line background. Finally, the rainbow display will appear in the hallway!
