A Rare Glimpse Into World War II

Hommel, Jan

From the desk of Jan Hommel, American Freedom Museum Director:

The American Freedom Museum and The Brook Hill School were honored to have Mrs. Helga Mullens on our campus this week. Mrs. Mullens spoke during chapel on Wednesday to 8th – 12th grade students about her experiences as a child in Germany. She gave students a rare glimpse into what it was like to live in Germany during and after World War II.

Mrs. Mullens is a resident of Little Rock, AR., and was born in Berlin, Germany in 1939. Her family lived in Berlin during World War II and was evacuated to live in rural Germany as Berlin was bombed by the Allies. They endured many hardships and often lived in fear with little or no food. Mullens eventually returned to the war-torn city of Berlin where she grew up. She married an American soldier stationed in Berlin in 1964 and later moved to America.

Mullens is the grandmother of eighth grade Brook Hill student Rachel Berkley and is a former German language school teacher in the Little Rock public schools. She has been married to Leo Mullens for 52 years and has three daughters and five grandchildren.

The Tyler Paper did a great article about Mrs. Mullens’ visit. You can read it here: http://www.tylerpaper.com/TP-News+Local/234981/german-survivor-of-world-war-ii-recounts-experience-for-brook-hill-students
