Baseball: Guard unable to overcome mistakes in loss to Tyler Grace

Defensive miscues contributed to a double-digit loss Thursday for Brook Hill varsity, which was stopped by Tyler Grace Community 18-4.

The game was the second of three consecutive TAPPS Division II District 3 clashes between The Guard and Grace. Brook Hill won the first one earlier in the week, 4-2, rallying from two runs down in the process.

In Thursday’s rematch home at Schwab Field, the Guard took the early initiative with two runs in the first inning. The game was tied at 3-3 entering the fourth inning. The Guard had not committed an error in those first three innings, but finished with seven for the game.

Grace used those miscues to take over the contest.

It spoiled a good offensive day from Campbell Fletcher and Brooks Parham. Fletcher went 3 for 3 with two runs scored and 2 two RBIs while Parham finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

The Guard grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Tyler Overbeek walked with two outs and went to second on a single by Miguel Vega. That set the table for Fletcher, who smacked a ball over the center fielder’s head for a two-run double.

Brook Hill trailed 3-2 in the bottom of third, but Parham got the Guard level with an RBI single that scored Fletcher, who had singled.

Parham drove in the Guard’s fourth run in the fifth. Fletcher and Logan Fitzgerald singled with one out and Parham singled to right field, bringing home Fletcher.

Brook Hill used eight different pitchers with reliever Reid Hill taking the loss, despite not allowing an earned run. Tyler Overbeek started the game before Hill entered in the third. Other pitchers Brook Hill called upon were Marty Foster, Dakota Gillespie, Mason Kelley, Jake Shaffer, Mason York and Cole Fitzgerald.

The Guard trailed 11-4 after five innings with Grace adding more runs to its ledger in the top of the seventh for the 18-4 final.

Brook Hill dropped to 9-5 overall with the loss and 1-1 in district. The Guard have an opportunity to avenge their defeat Tuesday in the third meeting between the two district foes. First pitch is 6 p.m. at Tyler Grace Community School.
