Baseball: Guard use 9-run inning to overpower Hawkins

Brook Hill varsity scored 13 runs on nine singles in a 13-3 win over Hawkins Thursday at the Carlisle Tournament, which evened the Guard’s season record to 2-2.

Multiple runs were driven by Miguel Vega (2), Campbell Fletcher (2), Brooks Parham (2) and Minchan Jeong, while Mason Kelley went 2 1/3 innings, allowing three unearned runs on one hit with two strikeouts to get the win on the mound. Dakota Gillespie tossed 1 1/3 inning of scoreless relief.

Brook Hill won its season opener earlier this month at Arlington Pantego Christian, 5-4, on a two-run walk-off single by Jeong.

The Guard then followed that up with losses to Tomball Rosehill Christian, 9-3, and 8-4 against Texas Home School (THESA).

Brook Hill stepped off the bus in Carlisle prepared to get back on the winning track. It only took one inning to do it.

After a scoreless first, the Guard erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the second to lead 9-0.

Vega led off with a single with Fletcher hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. A bunt single by Tyler Overbeek loaded the bases. The next batter flew out before Parham was hit by a pitch to drive in Vega. With the bases still loaded, Jeong laced a single to right field, scoring Fletcher and Overbeek to make it 3-0.

With runners on the corners, Brook Hill kept up the pressure with more bunts. The first one was an RBI bunt single by Seth Moss followed by a bunt from Logan Fitzgerald which turned into a run-scoring error to plate Jeong for a 5-0 lead.

Vega drove in another run with a grounder and reached on an error. Fletcher followed with a two-run single to center field that scored Fitzgerald and Logan Langford, who had walked, for an 8-0 lead. The final run came courtesy of walks to Overbeek to load the bases before Parham worked a bases-loaded walk to drive in his second run of the inning.

Hawkins sliced the lead to 9-3 in the third inning before the Guard went back to work in the bottom of the frame. An RBI single by Langford plated Moss with Fitzgerald coming home on an error. Langford raced home on an sac fly by Vega to make it 12-3.

Brook Hill needed one more run to put the 10-run rule into effect and Reid Hill provided it with an RBI single to score Fletcher.

The Guard are next set to face Frankston on Friday at the Carlisle Tournament.
