Called to Serve

From the desk of Ginger Bell, Director of Family and Alumni Relations

Ten years ago, Brittney Tellez graduated Brook Hill.  What has she been doing since?  She studied Nursing at Mary Hardin Baylor, joined the Navy and then served with  the Veterans Health Care System of Central Texas.

And now, Brittney is serving in Kandahar, Afganistan with the NATO Role 3 Multinational Medical Unit.  The unit was established in 2005 as part of an ISAF mission; originally supported by the UK, Netherlands, Denmark, Australia and the USA with Canada as lead nation.  They serve as the Regional Command-South’s primary trauma receiving and referral center for combat casualties, force health protection, combat stress and humanitarian care in direct support of OEF and ISAF.  In October 2009, the Canadians turned over a mission-ready facility to the US Navy.  Then on May 23, 2010, the original Role closed its doors and in its place, a 70,000 sq.ft. rocket-resistant, high-tech hospital was erected according to their website.

Brittney proudly serves with the unit and currently represents the “Sheets for Sailors” program. Twin sheets are in short supply for our troops and Brittney is raising awareness of this need in hopes of generating donations.  As she says, “…especially with the holidays coming up, if anyone is interested in making a donation to the program, it benefits our hard working men and women serving over here. Air Force, Navy, Marines and Army- we are all one force for good here.”
