Coding Through History

6th-grade computer science students visited the American Freedom Museum this week to explore the history of communication through a hands-on learning moment.

Each student paired up with a classmate and had the opportunity to learn about how signs and flags have been used throughout history to communicate without using words. Students used flags to sign messages across the room, much like a soldier would sign across a field, allowing the other team to translate their code. As a class, this provided the opportunity to understand the history of information science and explore the concept of code through history.
