Guard close season with 35-7 win at Tyler All Saints

TYLER — Brook Hill’s final regular-season game was the last time for seniors to showcase themselves in the Guard Blue and Orange, but it was a freshman who led the way in a in a 35-7 win over Tyler All Saints Friday at Mewbourne Stadium.

Freshman running back Carson Ezell carried the ball 13 times for a career-best 138 yards and 2 TDs as the Guard rolled up 270 yards rushing and three scores.

Brook Hill’s passing game was on point as well with senior quarterback McCray Fletcher completing 15 of 24 for 202 yards and two scores, one of those to fellow senior Seth Brasher, who led all receivers with 5 catches for 111 yards. Senior Ryan Cox also had a touchdown to go along with 4 catches for 32 yards.

Senior kicker Caleb Chadwell was also a perfect 5 for 5 on extra points in his final high school game.

The win was Brook Hill’s second in a row to give the Guard a 4-6 season and 3-4 finish in TAPPS Division II District 2.

Brook Hill was never threatened by the home side from Tyler, building a 21-7 lead at halftime before tacking on single scores in the third and fourth quarters.

The Guard jumped out ahead 6-0 on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Fletcher to Cox. Chadwell’s PAT made it 7-0 with 7:50 elapsed.

Brook Hill continued to boss the game with Fletcher going to the air again for his second touchdown, this time to Brasher on a 48-yard pass play. Chadwell’s kick made it 14-0 with 9:34 remaining in the half.

The Guard were not done scoring, but opted to do it on the ground this time. Ezell took care of the touchdown on a 1-yard run. Chadwell’s kick made it 21-0 with 4:38 left until halftime.

The home side finally responded with a touchdown with 1:22 left and made the PAT for the 21-7 halftime score.

The second half showcased Brook Hill’s running game. All told, six different players carried the football. Junior Jordon McGowen raced in from 5-yards out for the touchdown to help make it 28-7 following Chadwell’s PAT.

McGowen finished with 8 carries for 96 yards and that score.

The final TD of the game came courtesy of the player Brook Hill will be looking to in the future as Ezell broke loose for a 36-yard touchdown run.

This was the final game for several seniors as Brook Hill was eliminated from playoff contention last month after falling to Frisco Legacy Christian.

Brook Hill returns 27 lettermen, led by junior tailback Jordon McGowen and sophomore Jeremiah McGowen, junior receiver Parker Galbraith and freshman Ezell.
