Guard baseball competes at Marshall Tournament

MARSHALL — The Brook Hill varsity baseball team played four games in three days last week at the Marshall Tournament.

The Guard were edged out by one run (8-7) against Marshall and Pleasant Grove (3-2), lost 6-1 to Bullard and secured a 6-2 win over Liberty-Eylau.

The four results left the Guard with a 6-5 overall record.

Brook Hill begins district play on Tuesday at Carrollton Prince of Peace.

 

Guard 6, Liberty-Eylau 2

Brook Hill did most of its damage in its first at-bat and that proved to be more than enough to take down L-E.

The Guard scored five runs in the bottom of the first on five of their seven hits, highlighted by a three-run home run from Miguel Vega, which scored Chase Moore Mason Smith for a 3-0 lead.

Tyler Overbeek singled home Seth Brasher for the fourth run and Parker Clark singled and later scored on a wild pitch.

Still leading 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Brook Hill added an insurance run on a one-out RBI single from Reid Hill, which scored Clark.

Hill was masterful on the mound, delivering five scoreless innings while allowing two hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Logan Langford gave up two runs in his two innings of relief with five strikeouts.

Brook Hill led 6-o entering the bottom of the sixth, but surrendered four runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh as the Mavericks denied the Guard in an 8-7 loss.

Seth Brasher was 4 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Miguel Vega had a single, a home run and two RBIs, Josh Jenkins went 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs and McCray Fletcher finished 3 for 3 with two runs scored.

Starter Cole Cannon sailed until the sixth inning, giving up four runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout. Reliever Logan Langford takes the los, allowing four runs on 1 2/3 innings with two walks.

Bullard 6, Guard 1

Brook Hill was held to one run on three hits in a 6-1 loss to Bullard.

The Guard trailed 6-0 before getting on the board in the sixth. Reid Hill reached on an leadoff walk and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch.

Mason Smith took the loss on the mound for the Guard, allowing six runs on five hits with one strikeout in two innings. Josh Jenkins and Miguel Vega combined on four innings of scoreless relief.

Pleasant Grove 3, Guard 2

Brook Hill scored single runs in the first and second innings and held that lead until Pleasant Grove struck for three runs in the fifth to defeat the Guard 3-2.

Brook Hill  hurt itself with five errors in the game, three of those occurring in the all-important fifth inning.

Mason Smith finished 2 for 4 with an RBI with Logan Fitzgerald also driving in a run for the Guard in the loss.

Ryan Cox took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs — none of them earned — on five hits with four strikeouts.

Trailing 3-2, the Guard had two runners in scoring position after McCray Fletcher delivered a two-out single followed by a walk to Logan Fitzgerald and a wild pitch. Brook Hill’s next hitter struck out. The Guard went in order in the seventh.
