Guard deliver big win over 5A Abilene Cooper at Catclaw Classic

ABILENE — Bryant Robinson came to play and brought his teammates along for the ride as the Guard closed out play in the CatClaw Classic by taking down Class 5A Abilene Cooper, 58-52 to win the Consolation Championship.

The win gave Brook Hill a 7-5 record and coach Jacob Agnew said it was a great way to get on the bus and return back to East Texas after four games in three days.

“This was a huge win for us. I don’t know if anyone in the gym thought that we would be able to even stay on the court with Cooper, but we fought and executed and came out on top. I hope beating a quality school like Abilene Cooper will show the boys what they are capable of.”

Robinson led Brook Hill with 17 points and nine rebounds.

“He was running the floor and finishing around the basket and just being the force inside that we need him to be,” Agnew said about Robinson.

Parker Galbraith also delivered double figures with 15 points, making three 3-pointers to go along with four rebounds and three assists.

McCray Fletcher piloted everything with a team-high eight assists.

Ryan Cox was chosen to the All-Tournament team for his gritty and unrelenting play.

“Ryan plays hard all of the time and that’s what really make him the player that he is,” Agnew said. “He is so unselfish and such a team guy and will do anything to help us win. He fully deserved this after breaking his nose in the first quarter against Cooper and coming back in the second quarter and finishing the game.”

Led by 24 points from Ryan Cox, the Guard took down Midland Christian by 3 points in the consolation semifinals.

Cox saved his best for last, sapping a 63-63 when he was fouled on a made basket. With 4.6 seconds remaining, Cox drained the free-throw and Midland Christian’s three-point attempt to tie at the buzzer rimmed out.

“It was nice to win a close game at the end, especially against a team we may see later in the playoffs,” Agnew said. “Ryan really led us and our guys made some plays and hit some big shots.”

The hosts raced out to a 27-13 lead and Brook Hill never recovered. Colton Adams scored 11 points to lead the Guard with McCray Fletcher and Alec Kit both chipping in 10 points to the cause.

Brook Hill trailed 39-23 at halftime and couldn’t close the gap in the second half.

“They hit five 3-pointers in the first quarter and couldn’t seem to miss, and we just got too far behind,” Agnew said. “We played well after their first-quarter shooting exhibition, but Wylie is always a top team in the state and playing them will definitely help us down the road.”

Coach Agnew said Sabine also made “clutch free throws” down the stretch to deny the Guard.

“You have to hand it to them. They shot the ball amazing,” Agnew said.
