Guard district title celebrations put on hold with loss at Tyler All Saints

The TAPPS Division II District 3 championship will be decided on Friday. Brook Hill varsity was denied a chance to win it outright because of a 7-3 loss Monday to Tyler All Saints.

The result, coupled with a win for Tyler Grace, created a three-way tie for first place in the district. After a coin flip, Brook Hill will now face All Saints for the fourth time in five games. The winner of that game will take on Grace for the league title because Grace won the coin flip.

The Guard entered Monday’s game with an opportunity to avoid all of this. Brook Hill led three different times in the game, 1-0 in the second, 2-1 in the third and 3-2 in the sixth, but was unable to hold it.

Brook Hill’s Logan Langford, Miguel Vega and Dakota Gillespie were on the mound for the Guard with Vega taking the loss despite nine strikeouts.

Both Langford and Tyler Overbeek finished with two hits apiece in the loss.

After a scoreless first inning, Langford led off the second with a double and moved to third on a bunt single by Overbeek. Brook Hill tried a double steal, but was unsuccessful with courtesy runner Cole Fitzgerald thrown out at the plate. Overbeek moved to second on the putout and scored moments later on an RBI single from Logan Fitzgerald.

The game was tied 1-1 in the third until Campbell Fletcher put the Guard back in front. With one out, Seth Moss singled and moved to second on a hit from Vega. This set the table for Fletcher, who laced a single to left that scored Moss for a 2-1 lead.

The game was tied again 2-2 in the top of the sixth when Brook Hill grabbed the lead for a third time. With two outs, Langford smacked a single to center field. Overbeek then hit a ball over the centerfielder for an RBI double and 3-2 lead for the Guard.

Brook Hill surrendered five runs in the bottom of the sixth to come up short, 7-3.
