Guard drop heartbreaker to Tyler Gorman, 21-19

TYLER — Brook Hill nearly rallied from a 21-6 deficit, but ultimately fell two points short in a 21-19 loss to Tyler Bishop Gorman Friday at McCallum Stadium.

The loss dropped the Guard to 1-3 in TAPPS Division II District 2 leaving the Guard in a precarious spot. Brook Hill now needs to win out in its remaining three games to guarantee itself a playoff spot. Those contests are against Frisco Legacy Christian (Oct. 22, away), Carrollton Prince of Peace (Oct. 30, home) and Tyler All Saints (Nov. 6, away).

Brook Hill senior quarterback McCray Fletcher completed 13 of 28 passes for 226 yards and 3 TDs, two of those to senior Seth Brasher, who finished with 4 catches for 136 yards and 2 TDs. Junior Alec Kitt also had 4 catches for 53 yards with senior Jacob Dumesnil finishing with 3 catches for 41 yards, one of those for a touchdown.

The Guard as a team also rushed for 137 yards, led by junior Jordon McGowen’s 14 carries for 75 yards, but three lost fumbles by the Guard hindered their ability to complete the comeback.

The Guard also missed an extra point, were stopped on a 2-point conversion, had a turnover on downs inside the 10 and had a ball carrier tackled at the 1-yard line on the final play of the half.

The home team scored and got a two-point conversion on its first possession, and after the Guard were stopped on fourth down 5 yards away from a potential touchdown to answer, the home side used a big pass play to score again and put Brook Hill in a 15-0 hole.

Fletcher and Brasher got the Guard on the scoreboard with the senior quarterback hitting the team’s leading receiver for a 60-yard touchdown. The PAT missed to leave the score 15-6 with 4:46 remaining in the first quarter.

The home team scored again, but this time Brook Hill was able to block the extra point to leave the score 21-6 late in the first quarter.

Again it was Fletcher and Brasher to provide a response, this time on a 22-yard touchdown hookup. Brook Hill tried for a 2-point conversion, but was unsuccessful to make the score 21-12 in the second quarter.

Brook Hill attempted to draw closer at the end of the half with the Guard moving the ball inside the home team’s 10-yard line, but on the last play of the half, the Guard ball carrier was denied a yard away from pay-dirt to leave the score 21-12 at halftime.

The Guard defense blanked the home side in the second half, but turnovers kept preventing Brook Hill’s chances to cut into its deficit.

With just under 8 minutes remaining in the game, Fletcher found Dumesnil for an 8-yard touchdown pass with senior Caleb Chadwell converting the PAT to make the score 21-19 with 7:16 left to play.

Brook Hill couldn’t draw any closer after that.
