Guard edged out by Tyler Grace Community at home, 31-21

Brook Hill senior quarterback McCray Fletcher passed for over 300 yards and 3 touchdowns, but it was not enough to lead the Guard to victory against Tyler Grace Community Friday at Herington Stadium.

The Guard fell behind 14-0 in the second quarter and remained in catch-up mode throughout. Brook Hill closed to within 31-21 late in the fourth quarter, but Tyler Grace recovered the onside kick to end the game.

Brook Hill was held scoreless and until midway through the second quarter. Fletcher and his receivers started connecting and touchdowns followed.

Fletcher led the Guard on a 8-play 80-yard drive, completing passes to junior Parker Galbraith, senior Seth Brasher and senior Ryan Cox. Sophomore Jordon McGowen also rumbled for 8 yards and 4 yards later to set up 2nd and 6 from the Grace 15.

Brook Hill’s offense line gave Fletcher enough time to find Cox for a 15-yard touchdown. The PAT by Caleb Chadwell cut the Guard’s deficit to 14-7 with 1:59 remaining in the half.

Tyler Grace used a hook-and-lateral play to score a touchdown in response and reestablish the 14-point deficit.

Brook Hill still had time to respond and Fletcher did just that, firing a 32-yard pass to Seth Brasher on first down before finding Cox in the back of the end zone for a 13-yard touchdown. Chadwell’s PAT made it 21-14.

Tyler Grace was able to drive for a field goal in the final seconds to lead 24-14 at halftime.

Brook Hill spent most of the second half driving into Grace territory, only to come away with nothing for its efforts.

A sack denied the Guard  on their first drive.

Brook Hill’s defense returned the favor to get the ball back to the offense, which moved 73 yards in 11 plays, helped by a 24-yard scramble from Fletcher on 4th and 14. The drive stalled at the 10 and was followed by a missed field goal to keep the score, 24-14.

Grace added to its lead to now make Brook Hill’s job a little tougher, trailing 31-14 early in the fourth quarter.

The Guard again converted on 4th and long with Fletcher scrambling to find Alex Kitt for a 22-yard gain. Once again, the drive was halted in the red zone and Brook Hill missed a field goal.

Undeterred, the defense got the ball back for Brook Hill after forcing a turnover on downs.

This time the Guard were not going to be denied. Brook Hill drove 67 yards in 10 plays and never faced third down with Fletcher hitting Brasher on first-and-goal for a 7-yard TD and Chadwell’s PAT made it 31-21 with under a minute remaining.

In order to keep its comeback hopes alive, Brook Hill had to recover the ensuing onside kick, but a Tyler Grace player was able to grab it to end the game.

The loss dropped Brook Hill to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in TAPPS Division II District 2. The Guard next face undefeated Tyler T.K. Bishop Gorman on the road on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at McCallum Stadium.
