Guard finish UG tournament strong with win over LV Christian Heritage

GLADEWATER — Bryant Robinson hit for 15 points to lead Brook Hill to a 59-43 win over Longview Christian Heritage Saturday in the Third Place Game at the Union Grove Tournament. Parker Galbraith also finished in double figures with 10 as the Guard brought back a third-place trophy.

A day after being denied in a one-point loss to Avinger in the semifinals, the Guard took control in the second half against Christian Heritage. Brook Hill trailed LVCH 31-28 at halftime before outscoring the opposition 21-12 in the second half.

“We struggled in the first half to get going, but came out in the second half and played much better Brook Hill basketball,” Guard coach Jacob Agnew said.

Brook Hill went 2-1 in their three tournament games, defeating McLeod 51-40 in its opener Thursday before its 51-50 loss to Avinger on Friday. The Guard made no mistake on Saturday in running away from Christian Heritage to raise their overall record to 3-1.

“We got better this weekend,” Guard coach Jacob Agnew said. “The first game (against McLeod) we came out and played the way we should and got the win. Against Avinger in the semifinals, we played hard and competed, but just didn’t shoot the ball well at all. Despite that, I was really proud of how our boys fought (and almost pulled it out).

“We have a long way to go, but I am optimistic and know that these boys are very capable of big things.”

The Guard return to the hardwood on Tuesday, Dec. 1 to host the La Poynor Flyers. Tip-off for the varsity is set for 8 p.m. at Herrington Gymnasium.
