Guard go unbeaten to win Tommy Young Classic

The Brook Hill Guard enjoyed the weekend with three decisive victories, the final one over rival Bullard, to secure the championship trophy in the Tommy Young Classic held at Herrington Gymnasium.

The Guard were lethal from beyond the arc with Reid Hill, Jared Johnson, Alec Kitt and Parker Galbraith combining to drain 10 3-pointers. The Guard took a 22-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.

“We showed how we could play,” Guard coach Jacob Agnew said. “On both ends of the floor the boys really played a complete game against a very skilled Woodlands Christian team.

“Hitting 10 threes will always help the cause, but we got those open shots because of our ball movement and unselfish play. I was really proud all the way around.

The Guard were never threatened after taking control in the first quarter. Brook Hill led 35-17 at halftime and maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the second half.

Guard 56, West Rusk 39

The Guard led by two points at the end of the first quarter and were in front by five points, 25-20 at halftime. Brook Hill took over for good in the second half, outscoring West Rusk 31-19.

“After a big win (against Woodlands Christian) it took us a little while to get going (against West Rusk), Agnew said. “We were making some silly mistakes, but we cleaned things up in the second half.”

Hill led the team with 17 points and Galbraith finished with 16. Kitt also scored in double figures with 13.

Guard 62, Bullard 47

Facing its area rival on Saturday afternoon, Brook Hill never blinked, pushing out to a 15-11 lead at the end of the first period and staying on the gas in the second half to outscore Bullard 33-25 and win by 15 points.

“Playing Bullard is always a big game since we are separated by less than four miles,” Agnew said. “We started a little slow again, but finished strong and won the championship. For the weekend we won every quarter except one and really got after it.

“We are going to take what we did this weekend, build on it, and continue to get better. I am glad I get to coach every one of these guys. They make this fun.”

Brook Hill is back in on the hardwood Thursday in the Abilene Wylie Catclaw Classic. The Guard open up against UIL Class 6A Midland High at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Abilene.

Junior Varsity Report: The Guard competed at the La Poynor Tournament. Brook Hill defeated Frankston (28-22) and were edged out by Palestine Westwood (48-42).
